Tamela S. King
TEEN MOM Founder & President
At the age of 15, I became pregnant upon my first sexual encounter. I was alone, ashamed, confused, and displayed denial of my pregnancy. I hid my pregnancy from everyone for the first 5 1/2 months. I am blessed to say that my daughter was born healthy despite the lack of prenatal care.
Coming from a family of five siblings; I witnessed some of the struggles my mother went through to support the family. Despite many adversities and obstacles through-out my adolescence and young adult years, I decided enough was enough and I no longer wanted to remain on the negative side of the statistics of young mothers. Two years post high school, I enrolled in Houston Community College where I earned an Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from University of Houston - Downtown. In December 2013, I graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling.
I obtained the concept of TEEN MOM in my early twenties. I always kept the vision hidden away in my heart and hoped one day to bring the vision forth. In 2009, a strong sense of urgency came over me, saying it’s time to bring the vision forward. At that moment I knew it was God speaking and immediately started my research planning and organizing documents in preparation of TEEN MOM. I believe through the years, God was preparing me for this very moment.
I have been married for over 18 years to Derrick King Sr. and I reside in Houston, Texas. I believe that everyone can have the drive and motivation to accomplish any and everything that they set their mind on. I want to encourage our youth, along with other young mothers and fathers; that if I can overcome and succeed, then so can they. My motto is, “No Excuses Allowed.”
Derrick King Sr.
D.A.D. Co-Founder / Program President
I have been employed in the Oil & Gas Industry for over 15 years. I have a proven record in planning and implementing comprehensive strategies in support of scheduling goals and objectives. I have expertise in vendor relations, time management and using my organizational skills to prioritize and achieve delivery schedules set forth with the overall project scope in mind. I plan to bring my solid leadership skills to the board of TEEN MOM and I will serve as a mentor and program president to young men through the extension program D.A.D. (Dad’s Active Duty) within TEEN MOM.
The endurance through my own struggles of raising my children not only make me recognize the need for mentorship of young men who are fathers but also identify the need for young men to have a male role model that can understand them and the pressures of raising children.
I volunteer my spare time as a football coach where I mentor my son and other young boys. I enjoy singing, playing the keyboard and music production. My motto is, “Take in the moment; you'll never get it back.”
